A blueprint-style, bilingual walkthrough of the world's most popular single-handed dinghy — every part named, rigged step by step, and the physics of sailing it laid out in diagrams.
Every numbered part on the diagram is listed below with its English name, Chinese name, and what it actually does on the water.
Items 15–17 (vang, cunningham, outhaul) are the three "sail-shape controls." You'll meet them again in Section 04 — for now just know where they live.
From a bag of parts on the beach to a boat ready to launch. Always rig head-to-wind (bow pointing into the wind) so the sail flaps freely instead of powering up while you work.
Push the upper mast section firmly into the lower section until the spigot seats fully.
First slide the battens into their leech pockets (thin end in, snug not forced). Then sleeve the sail's luff over the mast, head first, all the way up.
Lift the mast vertical and drop its base into the mast step in the foredeck. It should spin freely.
Clip the boom to the gooseneck on the mast, then hook the sail's clew to the boom end.
Connect the three sail-shape lines: outhaul, cunningham and vang. These are the trickiest part — full breakdown below.
Lead the sheet through the block system so a light pull on your end trims the whole sail. How the purchase works is explained below.
Hang the rudder on the transom pintles and lock it down; slide the tiller forward under the traveler. Tie off the rudder hold-down and finish loose line-ends with a stopper knot (knots below).
Drop the daggerboard into its slot (leave it half-up near shore), launch, then push it fully down in deep water.
Three ropes, three edges of the sail. Each one tensions a different edge to change the sail's shape. Pull them all on to flatten and de-power in strong wind; ease them all off for a deep, powerful sail in light wind.
Three lines, three edges — outhaul = foot, cunningham = luff, vang = leech. More wind → pull all three on (flat sail). Less wind → ease all three off (full sail).
Each line attaches at the sail/spar corner it controls, runs through one or more blocks to multiply your pull, and finishes at a cleat you can release. Below: where each one starts, where it leads, and which way you haul it.
Tie the line to the clew, lead it around a block at the aft end of the boom, then forward along the boom to a cleat. Pulling the tail draws the clew out and flattens the foot.
Thread the line through the cringle (eyelet) low on the front edge, down through a block at the gooseneck, then to a cleat. Pulling down stretches the luff and flattens the sail.
A block-and-tackle runs between a fitting at the mast base and a fitting under the boom. Many rope falls multiply your pull, so a light hand hauls the boom hard down — controlling leech tension and twist.
The mainsheet is the rope in your hand that pulls the sail in and out. It runs through a set of blocks (pulleys) so a light hand-pull controls the big load on the sail.
Pull it in and the boom comes toward the centerline — the sail fills, powers up and points higher. Let it out and the sail opens and spills wind — less power. It is your throttle.
The blocks form a purchase (pulley advantage): the load is shared across several rope falls, so you pull a longer length but with much less force — light enough to hold a powered-up sail by hand. The ratchet block grips under load so your hand doesn't tire.
Never cleat the mainsheet in a dinghy. Hold it in your hand so you can dump it instantly in a gust — releasing the sheet is your fastest way to stop a capsize.
Six knots cover almost everything on a small boat. In each illustration below one rope is shown in orange, and the second rope — or the post / rail you tie onto — in green. 图示来自 Wikimedia Commons(公有领域)。
The non-jamming stopper. Put one on the end of the mainsheet and every control line so it can't run out through its block.
The sailor's most useful knot — a fixed loop for sheets, painters and dock lines that unties easily even after heavy load.
Two crossing turns — fast to tie and adjust. Good for fenders and lashing to a rail; back it up with a half hitch if it must hold hard.
The round turn takes the strain while you tie; two half hitches lock it. The go-to for painters, mooring rings and dock posts.
Flat and tidy for bundling a furled sail or tying in a reef. Not for a heavy load or two different-sized ropes — it can capsize and slip.
The reliable way to bend two lines together — works even when they differ in thickness, where a reef knot would slip. Double the tuck for slippery rope.

Rig with the bow into the wind and the mainsheet loose. A rigged boat left side-on to a gust can power up and flip on land or knock you down.
A boat cannot sail straight into the wind. As you turn away from the wind, the angle of the sail changes — this map of headings is the single most important concept in sailing.
To go toward the wind you cannot sail straight at it — you tack, zig-zagging at ~45° across the no-go zone. To go away from the wind you gybe, swinging the stern through the wind. As you turn away from the wind, let the sail out; as you turn toward it, pull the sail in.
You drive a Laser with two hands: the tiller (steering) in your back hand and the mainsheet (power) in your front hand. Two simple rules cover almost everything.
The tiller is one rigid arm clamped to the top of the rudder; you hold its forward end (usually through a hinged extension, so you can reach it while hiking out). Because the whole arm pivots at the rudder, the end in your hand and the blade under the boat always swing to opposite sides.
So the boat turns the opposite way to your hand: move the tiller end to port (left) and the bow swings to starboard (right). Move it gently — small nudges, then bring it back to centre. A hard-over rudder just drags like a brake.
An easy memory hook: move the tiller toward the sail/boom = bear away (turn away from the wind); move it away from the boom = head up (turn toward the wind).
For any course: ease the mainsheet out until the front edge of the sail just begins to flap (luff), then pull in just until the flapping stops. That is perfect trim. Re-check every time you change course or the wind shifts.
Telltales tell you faster: both yarns streaming straight back = perfect. Windward (inside) yarn lifting = ease out or bear away. Leeward (outside) yarn fluttering = pull in or head up.
Sail and steer together: as you head up (turn toward the wind) pull the sail in; as you bear away (turn from the wind) let it out. Hands move in opposite directions — front hand and back hand working as a pair.
At any moment the wind is on one side of the boat and the sail is set out to the other. To zig-zag upwind, or simply to turn onto the other tack, you have to swap the sail across — and there are exactly two ways to do it, depending on which end of the boat you turn through the wind.
The gybe is the move that most often capsizes beginners: downwind the boom carries full power and slams across head-height. Pull the boom in before you turn, keep your head low, and never gybe in a strong gust if you can bear away and tack around instead.
Why does a push of wind from the side make the boat go forward? Because two forces team up: the sail turns wind into a push, and the daggerboard stops the boat sliding sideways — so the only way left to go is forward.
The wind's total push on the sail (F_air, coral) points mostly sideways. Split it into two parts: a small drive straight forward and a large side force to leeward.
You're right to expect the water force to point the opposite way — it does. The water pushing back on the hull and daggerboard (F_water, teal) is, at a steady speed, equal and opposite to F_air. The two cancel, the net force is zero, and that is exactly why the boat holds a constant speed and course (Newton's first law) rather than accelerating forever.
Look at it component by component: the deep daggerboard supplies a sideways grip that cancels the side force (the boat barely slips sideways), and the hull's drag grows with speed until it cancels the drive. The boat settles at the speed where drive = drag. Pull the daggerboard up and nothing opposes the side force — so the boat just slides off downwind.
That same side force, acting high up on the sail, also tries to tip the boat over (heeling moment). You fight it with a moment of your own: your body weight hung out to the windward side (righting moment).
Balance the two and the boat sails flat and fast. When the wind gusts, the heeling moment jumps — so you must hike harder or spill wind. That is the whole job in Section 06.
A flat Laser is a fast, controllable Laser. When it blows hard the sail's heeling moment shoots up, so you must add righting moment (your body) and shed power (the sail). Keep the mast vertical and the boat sails itself.
Hook your feet under the hiking strap and straighten your legs so your back and shoulders hang out over the windward side. The further out your weight, the longer the lever and the more heel you cancel.
Move in steps as the wind builds: sit in the cockpit in light air → sit on the side deck in a breeze → full hike when it's strong. Come back in the instant the boat sits flat — don't over-flatten to windward.
Throw your weight further out to soak up the extra heeling force.
Let the sail out so the gust spills off it — then sheet back in as it passes.
Steer a touch toward the wind so it blows off the front of the sail.
Before it pipes up, flatten the sail to shed power: pull on cunningham (flattens the front) and outhaul (flattens the foot), and tension the vang so easing the sheet still spills the top. A flat sail in a flat boat is the goal.
Letting the boat heel makes it round up into the wind (weather helm) and stall — fighting it with rudder only slows you and can trip into a capsize. Cure the heel first (hike + ease), and the helm goes light again.
Everyone capsizes — it is a normal part of sailing a Laser, not an emergency. The hull floats, and one person can right it in under a minute using the daggerboard as a lever. The golden rule: stay with the boat.
Surface and keep a hand on the boat. Check you're free of all lines and the mainsheet is uncleated, then move to the centerboard sticking out of the hull.
Take a firm two-handed grip on the board, close to the hull. (If the boat has gone fully upside-down, pull the board to roll it onto its side first.)
Get your feet onto the board and lean your bodyweight back. The board works as a lever — the hull rolls upright and the mast lifts off the water.
As the boat comes up it scoops you toward the cockpit — climb in over the side deck, sit down, sort out the tiller and mainsheet, and sail on.
If the boat fully inverts (mast straight down — "turtle"), stand on the upturned gunwale and pull back on the centerboard to bring it onto its side first, then recover as above. The hull floats — never dive under it, and stay with the boat.
A short pre-launch safety checklist, then the words you'll hear on the water — every term used in this guide, in plain English and Chinese.
1. Wear a properly fitted buoyancy aid (PFD). 2. Check the forecast — avoid offshore winds that blow you away from land. 3. Never sail alone; tell someone your plan and return time. 4. Know how to right a capsize before you need to. 5. Dress for the water temperature, not the air. 6. If in trouble, stay with the boat — it floats and is far easier to spot than a swimmer.
Keep the boat flat, keep the telltales streaming, ease in the gust and sheet in the lull — and when in doubt, let the mainsheet go. Everything else is practice.
